10 Top Tips to help teach mindfulness to children

When guiding your children or young individuals in the exploration of mindfulness and its advantages, we suggest you adhere to a few guidelines:

  1. Prioritize your own mindfulness practice! Establish a daily routine for mindfulness to ensure its regular practice.

  2. Invite them to join you in practising mindfulness; often, having a role model can make a significant difference.

  3. Remember the objective of mindfulness and practice in a positive context and never used it as a punitive measure.

  4. Create an environment conducive to successful mindfulness practice; this could involve rearranging furniture, placing a cushion on the floor or simply changing positions. (In schools we recommend a chill-out zone)

  5. Ensure the child is in a receptive state to embrace mindfulness; if they are brimming with energy and eager to engage in physical activities, it might not be the ideal moment to introduce mindfulness.

  6. Use language that is age-appropriate and easily comprehensible. We often use the concept of a 'monkey mind'. And how our thoughts and feelings can sometimes be like a monkey jumping around inside our heads.

  7. Reassure them that it's perfectly normal to lose focus, (or for the monkey mind to come back) and teach them how to gently redirect their attention back to mindfulness. You can even suggest the thought is given to the monkey to hold while they go back to the mindful practice.

  8. Share your personal mindfulness experiences with the children; this will help them understand its practical application in daily life. Feel free to discuss how you refocus when you find yourself distracted during a mindfulness session.

  9. Encourage the children to share their own experiences, whether they had a positive mindfulness session or found themselves distracted. In a school setting perhaps each session could conclude with a few children sharing their experiences.

  10. Conclude the session by participating in an activity they enjoy, to associate mindfulness with positive experiences.
